California Fig
Advisory Board
The California Fig Advisory Board represents 100%
of the Nation's commercial dried fig producers and processors.
Madera is the number one fig producing county, followed by Merced
and Fresno Counties. Fig acreage totals nearly 10,000 acres with
an average production totaling 12,000 tons. In addition, approximately
3,000 tons of fresh figs are shipped to major markets in the
United States, Canada and the Orient.
Dried figs are often referred to
as "Nature's Most Nearly
Perfect Fruit." They are higher in dietary fiber than other
fruits and, on an equal weight basis, contain more calcium than
milk and more potassium than bananas. Figs are fat-free, sodium-free
and, like other plant foods, cholesterol-free. This versatile fruit
can be enjoyed at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and is an ideal snack
item. The most common commercial usage is in fig bars and cookies.
