The California Forest Products Commission was established in 1990 to enhance the public’s understanding of the benefits of forestry and forest products in California. It is funded by forest landowners and purchasers of logs grown from trees in California. These businesses primarily grow pine, fir, redwood and cedar trees to manufacture lumber, paneling, windows and doors mostly for California and U.S. consumers. Additionally, dozens of by-products, from paper pulp to landscaping materials and energy, are produced from wood that comes from California forests.

Ranking as one of the state’s top agricultural and manufacturing sectors, California’s forest products industry is a vital component of the state’s economy. The industry employs approximately 100,000 workers with an annual payroll of $3.4 billion. It ranks third in production of wood products behind Washington and Oregon, producing enough lumber each year to build 120,000 homes.

California’s forest landowners lead the world in utilizing sustainable forestry principles to balance our need for wood products with protection of the state’s 37 million acres of forest environment. Today, there is almost as much forestland as we had 100 years ago and for the past 30 years growth has exceeded harvest in California’s forests.
